Peru Colorado

Photos Mike Sinnwell September 2018

I have been told there was a town here by the name of Peru. You would be hard pressed to believe it based on what we saw. Maybe it was just a mine and a camp? The standing cabin was down the road from the mine.

Muriel Sibell Wolle claims she was told there never was a town by the name of Peru. According to Perry Eberhart, “Peru was a convenient title given to a boardinghouse and miners cabin around the Peruvian Mine.” Another ghost town mystery solved.  That mine was founded in 1874 but it did not produce steadily.

Peru is noted for two events, one a governor’s visit and the other a major swindle. Good old Gassy Thompson strikes again. If you hire him, you better watch him close.
