New Raymer Colorado Townsite - Ghost town

Photos courtesy of Mike Sinnwell December 2007

New Raymer sometimes referred to as Raymer. Probably because the original town named Raymer was moved in the early 1900's and went thru a rebirth as a result of new settlers.  The original town was plotted in 1888. The original settlers came because of the Homestead act, the encouragement and transportation offered by the railroad and the promise of the ownership of new land. After a few harsh winters and several summer droughts these Mid West and Eastern farmers that had migrated gave it up and moved on. They were not familiar with the treeless plains and the dry land farming methods required to make a living.  Many left in the 1890s. Cattle ranchers had been in the area since the 1860's.
