Ashcroft Colorado Ghost town
Photos September 2002
Hard to believe that this Ghost town once rivaled Aspen in size and importance.
Ashcroft was founded in about 1881 by a gentlemen named Ashcraft. Not sure why the towns name was spelled different then his name. Ashcroft boasted a population of about 3500 in 1885. Access to Ashcroft was via Taylor Pass where the wagons had to be disassembled and lowered over the cliffs. Ashcroft is located about 18 miles from Aspen.
