Lincoln City Colorado Ghost Town

Not much left of this town. Couple buildings, some falling down cabins and the usual mine tailings. Easy to get to with 2 wheel drive. Apparently this is where wire gold (twisted strands of pure gold) was discovered in French Creek. The town never got much bigger then several hundred people in the early 1880's and by the 1890's it was down to less than 30 people.
A viewer writes - Friday, April 20, 2012 - I was so excited to see your pictures of Lincoln City, Colorado! My great- great- great Grandparents, Catherine McCormick Williams and George A Williams owned a hotel there ( the Williams Hotel ). They first arrived in Colorado in 1873, and made their way to Buena Vista, then Montezuma - actually Decatur - then to Lincoln City in 1884. George Williams died in 1888 and Catherine stayed in Lincoln City until around 1890. She then moved to Breckenridge and lived with her daughter Maggie Williams McKenna Butcheck until her death in 1904. My great- great- grandmother Mary (Mamie) Williams Mitchell and her sisters Maggie and Anna Kirts all at one time or other ran boarding houses at different mining camps, The Jessie, the Wellington, and others around Summit County. She also was a midwife and helped the doctors in town. She was matron of the hospital in her later years. Her daughter, my great grandmother Jennie Mitchell Custer and husband John V. Custer were the owners of the Wheeler valley, now the village of Copper Mountain ski resort. They bought the land in the early 1940's. My grandmother Marjorie Custer Beeler inherited the land and cabin, and eventually sold it to developers in the early 1970's. My brother Mike Brennan was the last person to live in the cabin at Copper in 1973. My family is all buried in Valley Brook cemetery in Breckenridge. Sue (Brennan) Young
